BAFE SP101 Technical Update

Thursday 19th September 2019

Health and Safety in the workplace and Asbestos Awareness

BAFE introduced its revised fire extinguisher (SP101) scheme in October 2017 with an additional focus on the safety of fire extinguisher technicians and their working practices. This included new requirements to provide evidence of training in Health and Safety in the workplace and Asbestos Awareness from training providers delivering accredited training accepted by BAFE.

Following a review by the Scheme Monitoring Group of the requirements of validity of training certificates, BAFE has agreed that the validity for asbestos awareness is five years from date of issue, irrespective of the expiry date shown on the training certificate. Annual awareness should be provided in-house to ensure knowledge of asbestos awareness is maintained; this could be in the form of e-learning or internal toolbox talks or other health & safety updates from management or supervisors who are competent to do so. This approach is consistent with HSE guidance on asbestos awareness.

Health & Safety training validity should be maintained in accordance with the requirements of the training provider.
